Starting to connect the dots

Irritable Bowel  Syndrome, Chronic Fatigue, Fibromyalgia…….all disorders I “learned” were not real medical problems but were manifestations of mental health disorders in neurotic women. What the world of Integrative/ Alternative medicine has known for decades is that these are true disorders with quite a bit of overlap between the three of them, especially as it relates to gut dysfunction. Conventional medicine offered these patients psychotropics to treat their mental illness but those providers ahead of the curve discussed diet, gut flora, antibiotic overuse, stress and suggested specific dietary interventions, introduction of good bacteria via fermented foods and probiotics and specific supplements to correct the underlying  cause. If more was needed a regimen of antibiotics that target just the gut were prescribed  .

This happens to be the same protocol used today for Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth also known as SIBO. This is a specific type of gut dysbiosis in one part of the GI tract and often involving bacteria that normally live in the GI tract but in different areas and in more controlled populations. This antibiotic is called XIFAXAN and it was recently approved for use in Irritible Bowel Syndrome and has started  direct to consumer marketing. If we are now officially treating IBS with antibiotics that must mean there is an actual recognized problem in the GI tract that is the root of the problem. Since a large portion of Serotonin is made in the GI tract AND  we know that bacteria are responsible for good metabolites like B vitatamins as well as negative ones that can all have an impact on mental health we can now reassure all these patients that they are not crazy and they probably do not need those antidepressants.

So what happens now? If you are a patient with IBS, SIBO, Chronic Fatigue or Fibromyalgia and you are not addressing your gut you will not get to the root of the problem. Find a provider that understands this and can help develop a Biomedical Plan for you. The really good news is this issue is very easily handled via Telemedicine visits either live audio, video or even email format. The diagnosis of these disorders in 90% history. The exam rarely provides any additional info and labs and dianostics are to rule out other potential causes. You can work with a provider on the other side of the state or the country if you do not have one locally. Our officee has been utilizing these types of visits for years in order to provide care to patients not within driving distance. Please contact our office if you would like to make appointment.
